To a large extent, the Sermon can be seen as Jesus’ blessing of his disciples (5:3–12) followed by the enunciation of the calling (5:13–16) that he has given them to be salt and light. The implications of that calling are then fully spelled out in the main body of the Sermon. The order of these parts, however, is significant.
